Job Purpose The Database Admin and Developer is responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, security, and availability of the group’s database environments. The role owns database design, indexing and query optimisation, backup and recovery, replication and high availability, while controlling schema changes and data migrations to protect production data. It combines hands-on database administration and development across SQL Server, PostgreSQL and Redis, working closely with engineering and platform teams to deliver scalable, automated, and reliable database solutions Design and maintain reliable, scalable database environments across SQL Server, PostgreSQL and Redis. Optimize database performance, including queries, indexing, execution plans, blocking and deadlocks. Manage backup, recovery, replication and high availability, including restore and failover testing. Control schema changes and data migrations, ensuring safe and automated production releases. Develop and maintain T-SQL stored procedures, functions, views, ETL processes and data integrations. Manage database security and access, including permissions, encryption, masking and audit logging. Monitor database health, capacity and availability, and support incident response and troubleshooting. Partner with Engineering, Platform, Reliability and Security teams to establish and maintain database standards and best practices. Use AI-assisted tools to support database development, analysis and performance diagnosis, while reviewing and validating all outputs. 5+ years of experience administering and developing production relational databases, with strong hands-on MS SQL Server and T-SQL experience and working knowledge of PostgreSQL. Strong experience in query optimisation, indexing, execution plans and production performance troubleshooting. Hands-on expertise in backup, recovery, replication and high availability, including restore and failover testing. Experience with schema migration tools such as DbUp, Flyway or Liquibase. Working knowledge of Redis, containerised workloads, connection pooling, credential rotation and TLS. Hands-on experience with the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana). Exposure to cloud-managed databases across AWS, Azure, GCP or Alibaba Cloud, alongside on-premise environments. Working knowledge of Linux/Bash, PowerShell and Windows command-line tools. Strong problem-solving, ownership and attention to detail, with the ability to troubleshoot database issues under production pressure. Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and the ability to critically review and validate AI-generated outputs. So, what does it really mean to work at First.Tech?
