Tangent International is supporting an established technology organisation in Munich with the appointment of a Senior Software Engineer specialising in Java backend development. We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Java engineer who enjoys building and improving scalable backend applications and microservices. This position would suit someone operating at or approaching Senior level who has strong experience across the Java ecosystem and understands the underlying principles of Java, rather than working solely at framework level. The role You will join an experienced engineering team responsible for designing, developing and maintaining business-critical backend applications and services. Your responsibilities will include: Designing, developing and maintaining backend applications using Java and Spring Boot Building and developing microservices and REST APIs Taking ownership of services throughout the software development lifecycle Contributing to system design, architecture and technical decisions Modernising and improving existing applications and services Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues within production environments Improving application performance, scalability, reliability and maintainability Working with relational databases and SQL Collaborating with Product, QA, DevOps and other Software Engineers Participating in code reviews and contributing to engineering best practices Supporting and mentoring less experienced engineers where appropriate Strong commercial experience developing backend applications with Java Good knowledge of core Java and the wider Java ecosystem Commercial experience with Spring / Spring Boot Experience designing and developing microservices Strong experience building and consuming RESTful APIs Experience with SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL or Oracle Understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, collections and common software design principles Experience working with modern software development and CI/CD practices Comfortable taking ownership of technical problems and working independently when required Experience with technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka, Maven, Gradle and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP would be beneficial. Exposure to areas such as JVM performance, multithreading/concurrency, event-driven architectures and distributed systems would also be advantageous, but is not essential.
