We are a small product team building software for the education sector: exams, report cards, scoring, and ranking for schools and their students. We are looking for a hands-on Tech Lead with a strong backend background to take full ownership of our most complex work and, over time, raise the technical level of the team. We are an AI-first engineering team. Most of our code is written with AI coding agents, and we expect our Tech Lead to work the same way. What you will do What we are looking for

- Own complex work end to end. Take a loosely defined business need, clarify it, design the solution, build it, ship it, and make sure it works in production.
- Build AI-first. Deliver your own work through vibe coding at high speed, and set the practices that keep AI-generated code correct, reviewable, and maintainable across the team.
- Translate between business and software. Understand what our customers and stakeholders actually need, turn it into a sound technical design, and explain technical trade-offs in plain language.
- Design and build backend services in Java and Spring Boot on top of SQL Server, including data modeling, query performance, and service integration.
- Work across layers. Most of our hard problems touch business rules, application code, the database, and infrastructure at once. You should be comfortable following a problem wherever it leads.
- Keep production healthy. Diagnose incidents, improve monitoring, and take part in CI/CD and deployment.
- Raise the team. Review code, mentor two junior and two mid-level engineers, and help them grow into work that currently needs a senior.
- AI-first development is how you work, not something you are trying out. You build with AI coding agents (vibe coding) every day, you have shipped substantial production work this way, and you keep up with new models and tools as they appear. If you still write most of your code by hand, this role is not a fit.
- 7+ years of professional software development, mostly on the backend. We need that depth so you can direct AI well and judge what it produces.
- Deep knowledge of Java and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring Data, JPA/Hibernate).
- Strong relational database skills: transactions and isolation levels, locking and deadlocks, query optimization. SQL Server experience is a strong plus.
- Solid grasp of software architecture: service communication patterns, API design, authentication and authorization, testing strategy.
- Working experience with Docker, CI/CD, and monitoring and troubleshooting production systems.
- A track record of delivering work independently, from unclear requirements to production.
- Proven ability to understand a business domain and work directly with non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring other engineers, including helping them work effectively with AI.

- Frontend experience with React. You will not be a frontend developer, but you should be able to read, review, and occasionally change frontend code.
- Kubernetes or another container orchestration platform.
- In-memory data stores such as Redis or Hazelcast.
- Background in education technology, assessment, or data-heavy reporting systems.
